Newsletter: Smiles and Berms, EVT re-works Sidewinder Trail

Updated: Jul 13

It's May and spring is in the air, or at least it was, for a couple of weeks anyway.  Despite the recent reappearance of winter in Northern Utah, the crew at Eden Valley Trails (EVT) was able to capitalize on the brief window of early season good weather to complete their first trail work of the season on the Sidewinder trail, a four-mile loop nestled on the foothills below Powder Mountain in the Bridges housing development.

The goal of the work that was carried out was two-fold.  The primary concern was trail remediation from water damage and improvements that would facilitate better drainage in the future.  In some parts of the trail this included extensive reworking of water crossings and rock armoring, as well as re-working the grades and cambers (angle) of the trail to aid in water flowing off, rather than down, the trail.

The secondary goal was an overall improvement of the "flow" of the trail to make it a more enjoyable experience for all trail users.  This aspect included the improvement and addition of a number of banked turns, known as "berms", the addition of some fun and challenging dirt and rock features, as well as widening the tread of the trail in multiple locations facilitate a better user experience for adaptive bikes as well.

On the first Saturday after the work was completed, and before winter blanketed the valley again, the newly refreshed trail was bustling with users eager to enjoy the warm weather, dry dirt, and beautiful scenery.  With any luck the sun will quickly usher back in some warmer weather so all can get back out and enjoy.  In the meantime, the Eden Valley Trails crew has moved their equipment to North Fork Park and begun the initial stages of their next project. They will be doing an extensive re-working of the trail "365" with the goals of restoring it to a truly beginner-friendly level, while improving drainage and adaptive bike accessibility.  This will also help facilitate easier and more consistent grooming of the trail in the winter for fat-biking.

You can keep up with their progress, donate, or learn more about them on their website, www.edenvalleytrails.com as well as Instagram and Facebook. Happy Trails!
